Blackheads, literally speaking, are small pin head to pin tip sized black spots on the face. Blackheads usually are early signs of acne although people have also referred at age spots and freckles as blackheads. Medically the term “open comedones” is synonymous with blackheads.
When and where do they occur?
Blackheads commonly occurs during adolescence and early adulthood. It is usually present alongside other lesions of acne like white heads and red spots with some pain. They can happen anywhere on the face but are often most prominent and bothersome on the nose and cheeks.
Reasons for blackheads

Blackheads happen due to the effects of changing hormones on the skin glands. The gland is the sebaceous gland which produces an oily product called sebum. Some amount of sebum is necessary to maintain skin hydration. During puberty, the gland becomes sensitive to the effects of the changing hormones and becomes larger in size and produces more sebum causing the skin to appear oily. The skin cells adjacent to the opening of the glands grow and multiply in number and block the opening of the glands. Dust from the environment settles on the blocked gland and gives the appearance of a blackhead.
