FOURTH ODI: INDIA LEVEL SERIES AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA, VIRAT KOHLI SCORES TON
It was carnage at the Wankhede stadium with AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis smashing unbelievable centuries to propel South Africa to 438/4, a record ODI score in India. Kagiso Rabada and Dale Steyn never allowed India to get going and they sealed victory by 214 runs, thus sealing a historic bilateral series win for South Africa at home. Catch all the moments here.
21:10 hrs IST: Here are some post-match comments from both the skippers:
AB de Villiers: "A very enjoyable performance today. I think we assessed the conditions nicely. The openers gave a nice foundation. He (Rabada) is an amazing bowler. He loves to learn and the potential he has shown is incredible. It's never easy touring India. It was a great series."
MS Dhoni: "Our pacers don't get the same amount of bounce as the South African bowlers. All three hundreds hurt. We lost it in the last 25 overs with the ball. I think the bowlers fought hard throughout."
20:52 hrs IST: The big factors behind this series win have been the contributions of De Villiers, du Plessis, de Kock and Rabada. De Villiers smashed 358 runs at an average of 89 with three centuries while du Plessis provided stability with 323 runs at an average of 80.25. De Kock continued his love affair for India by scoring two centuries. With the ball, Rabada was an asset with 10 wickets at an average of 24.1.
20:48 hrs IST: Its all over. Rabada traps Amit Mishra plumb in front with a fast yorker and South Africa win the match by a massive margin of 214 runs. India were never in the match after South Africa had raced to 438/4 with AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis scoring centuries. Ajinkya Rahane kept the hosts in the game with a blistering 87 but the asking rate was a bit too much for him.
20:40 hrs IST: The end is near for India. MS Dhoni is cleaned up by the googly from Imran Tahir and he falls for 27. South Africa are on the cusp of history.
20:35 hrs IST: India might be heading for a big defeat, however, the fans at the Wankhede are still happy and are cheering. Find out why!
20:32 hrs IST: WICKET! Another one falls. Bhuvneshwar, who gave away 106 runs with the ball, manages just one run with the bat. Bhuvneshwar c Miller b Tahir 1 (8).
Flighted delivery outside off, Bhuvneshwar slogs it to long-on and it goes straight to Miller. Ends a horror night for Bhuvneshwar, who will be looking to forget this night as soon as possible. India 210/8, still needing 229 runs.
20:29 hrs IST: India still need over 230 runs. This is impossible even for the likes of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is a renowned finisher. South Africa will be looking to mop up the tail quickly.
20:19 hrs IST: WICKET! India are going down without a fight and they are losing wickets regularly. Harbhajan Singh c (sub Chris Morris) b Steyn 0 (4).
Short ball and it zips through the surface thanks to Steyn's extra pace, Harbhajan pushes at it and Morris takes the catch at cover. India are 201/7 and South Africa are three wickets away from their first-ever series win in India.
20:11 hrs IST: WICKET! Axar goes and South Africa close in on history. Axar Patel c Miller b Steyn 5 (6).
Short and wide ball from Steyn outside off, Axar cuts it straight to point. India are 195/6 after 29 overs. South Africa are closing in on history.
20:04 hrs IST: In the air and just falls in front! Dean Elgar makes a complete mess of it. Dhoni mistimes the slog to deep cover and the ball flies off the bottom edge, Elgar cannot spot the ball and he is late in starting off, he dives forward but the ball falls just in front. India are 191/5 after 28 overs, needing a further 248 runs more for a win, which is looking more distant with each passing over.
19:57 hrs IST: WICKET! This is probably it. Ajinkya Rahane falls and Dale Steyn has delivered the body blow for India. Rahane c Behardien b Steyn 87 (58).
Rahane's majestic knock ends. Short ball outside off, Rahane goes for the pull but he mistimes it totally, the catch is easily taken at deep midwicket and India are now tottering at 185/5 in 26.2 overs, needing 254 runs more for victory, which seems to be improbable now.
19:47 hrs IST: WICKET! Suresh Raina's miserable time continues. He completely misjudges the yorker and he is bowled behind his legs. Raina b Rabada 12 (13).
Rabada fires in a yorker on leg stump, Raina moves to the off side and looks to work it to the leg side, but he takes his eyes of the ball and the ball crashes into the base of leg stump. India are 172/4 in 24.5 overs, needing 267 runs more for a win.
19:42 hrs IST: The departure of Dhawan has not slowed down Rahane. He is looking in sublime touch and he is motoring away. Suresh Raina gets going with a slog sweep off Tahir and it sails into the stands at deep mid wicket.
19:37 hrs IST: WICKET! Brilliant catch by Amla and the dangerous stand is broken. Rabada is becoming the go-to bowler for South Africa. Dhawan c Amla b Rabada 60 (59).
Full ball from Rabada and it nips away, Dhawan looks to turn it to mid wicket but gets a leading edge that flies to cover, Amla runs to his left and dives to take the catch, however, he bangs his head hard on the turf and he seems to have injured himself. But, he is fine and the 112-run stand is broken. India 156/3 in 22.3 overs, needing 283 runs more for a win.
19:29 hrs IST: Brilliant from Rahane. He gets to his 13th ODI fifty off 41 balls with a crunching drive through wide long-off for a boundary. It is his third fifty this series. India are staying in the game at 133/2 in 20.3 overs, needing 306 runs more for a victory.
19:18 hrs IST: Finally, 'The One' Breaks his rut. He scores his 15th ODI fifty and his first of the series as he tries to keep India afloat in this chase. Rahane is also batting well but the required rate is over 10.
19:14 hrs IST: Rahane and Dhawan are batting wonderfully out there. The partnership has already gone past fifty and Rahane is scoring at a strike-rate of well over 120.
19:02 hrs IST: While India try to revive their faltering run-chase, over in Dubai, England have moved to 130/3 at stumps, still needing 361 runs for an unlikely victory. Joe Root is unbeaten on 59.
18:55 hrs IST: Dropped! Rare lapse in the field from South Africa! Dhawan slashes a wide ball from Steyn to backward point but Miller fluffs the chance. Next ball, Rahane unfurls two glorious straight drives and India are 82/2 in 14 overs, needing a further 357 runs off 36 overs. Asking rate almost close to 10.
18:52 hrs IST: Almost a run-out! Brilliant work from AB de Villiers and he is super quick to release the ball and score a direct hit at the bowler's end. However, Rahane just makes it and India battle on.
18:40 hrs IST: With the departure of Rohit and Kohli, India seem to be deflated. The South African bowlers are giving nothing away. Rabada's extra pace has made the difference on this track while Abbott has been a welcome addition.
18:29 hrs IST: WICKET! What a horrendous shot from Virat Kohli. Fantastic catch by Quinton de Kock and India are under serious pressure. Virat Kohli c de Kock b Rabada 7 (6).
Horror shot under the circumstances. Rabada bowls a wide delivery outside off, Kohli is rooted to the crease and he chases after it, the edge flies to the right of De Kock who dives and takes a good catch with one hand.India 44/2 in 7.4 overs, needing 395 runs more for a win that is looking more unlikely.
18:19 hrs IST: WICKET! Not a happy homecoming for Rohit Sharma in his first ODI in his hometown. Rohit Sharma c Tahir b Abbott 16 (20).
Full ball and it swings away slightly, Rohit has an almighty swipe across the line and the edge flies to third man where Tahir takes a neat catch. India 22/1 in the fifth over, needing 417 more for a win.
18:12 hrs IST: Drama in the fourth over! Rohit Sharma looks to flick it to fine leg and he gets an edge but Quinton de Kock spills the chance. Next ball, Shikhar Dhawan looks for a quick single but he is sent back and the throw misses at the bowler's end. Dhawan would have been a goner if that had hit. India 21/0 after four overs.
18:00 hrs IST: The records are totally against India. However, Rohit Sharma, who is playing in his first ODI in his hometown, gets going with two boundaries off Dale Steyn. Perfect start.
17:35 hrs IST: Just another snippet! This is the second time that three batsmen have scored a century in an ODI innings. South Africa achieved this feat the first time when they tore apart West Indies in the World Cup game at Sydney. In that match, De Villiers smashed the fastest 150 in cricket history.
17:30 hrs IST: Phew! Take a deep breath, folks. This onslaught by South Africa, in particular by AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have absolutely bedazzled us. South Africa are in the ascendancy and how! They scored 144 runs in the final 10 overs with AB de Villiers scoring his 23rd ODI century and his third in the series. The fact that he achieved it off 57 balls made this his third-fastest century ever. Faf du Plessis notched up his maiden ODI century against India while Quinton de Kock notched up his fifth century against India. The score of 438/4 is the highest total in ODIs in India, beating the score of 418/5 by India against West Indies in Indore in 2011.
17:14 hrs IST: WICKET! AB de Villiers goes! South Africa might struggle to get to 450 now. AB de Villiers c MS Dhoni b Bhuvneshwar Kumar 119 (61).
Short ball and on the middle and leg stump line, de Villiers goes for the pull and he gets a faint edge to the keeper. Brilliance from AB comes to an end and the whole of Wankhede stand up and applaud this genius.
17:05 hrs IST: AB de Villiers is now certainly the Greatest Of All Time! He smashes his 23rd ODI century off just 57 balls. It is his sixth century against India and third in this series. It is the third-fastest century in his career. This is now the second time that three batsmen have scored a century in one innings. South Africa had achieved the feat against the West Indies in Sydney in the 2015 World Cup.
16:53 hrs IST: Du Plessis has retired hurt on 133. The cramping is just too much for du Plessis to handle. David Miller has come to bat and this situation is ideal for him.
16:50 hrs IST: Faf du Plessis smashes another six and he gets to his highest individual score in ODIs, going past the 126 that he made against Australia in that tri-series in Harare. How much can these two plunder?
16:45 hrs IST: Du Plessis smashes another six off Axar and he is down with severe cramps. MS Dhoni is giving him some help but a decision has to be taken whether he needs to retire or not. Axar has conceded 24 runs, with three sixes. South Africa are absolutely butchering India.
16:40 hrs IST: Brilliant from du Plessis and India's pain continues. He notches up his fifth ODI century and his first against India. He leaps in the air in delight. Next over, he smashes Axar Patel for two sixes and he is cramping up. The ball is lost somewhere in the roof and du Plessis is getting some treatment.
16:34 hrs IST: AB de Villiers is in full flow. He smashes two sixes off Mohit Sharma. He is currently on 72 off 42 balls, including two fours and six sixes. Watch this period! De Villiers might get South Africa past 400 if he continues in this vein.
16:23 hrs IST: Brilliance from AB de Villiers! He gets to his 48th ODI fifty and his sixth against India with a huge six off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He is looking in ominous form and du Plessis is also nearing his century. Things are not looking good for India.
16:17 hrs IST: Catch dropped by Mishra! India's fielding woes continues. Du Plessis made room and cut a short ball to point but Amit Mishra at point spills the chance, Rohit Sharma immediately pounces on it and fires a throw at the bowler's end, de Villiers hares back and the throw hits the stumps, de Villiers was just in. Good effort from Rohit but poor effort from Mishra.
16:14 hrs IST: The partnership is going at over seven runs an over. At this rate, South Africa are on course to break the highest score at this venue, which is 358/6 by New Zealand against Canada during the 2011 World Cup.
16:00 hrs IST: The average score at the Wankhede stadium is 233 and South Africa have already gone past it. Faf du Plessis is coming close to his century and AB de Villiers is already up and running. South Africa 240/2 in 35 overs.
15:45 hrs IST: Du Plessis and de Villiers are already making smooth progress. These are not good signs for India. With the pace bowlers struggling, Dhoni has to rely on Kohli and Raina to get some overs out of the way.
15:35 hrs IST: WICKET! Suresh Raina strikes and the 154-run partnership has been broken. Amazing knock by De Kock comes to an end. He was absolutely drained in the Mumbai heat. Quinton de Kock c Kohli b Raina 109 (87).
Suresh Raina floats a slow and full delivery outside off, De Kock comes down the track and lofts it down the ground, he cannot generate the power needed and holes out to long-off. Magnificent knock comes to an end.
15:34 hrs IST: What amazing consistency shown by Faf du Plessis. He scores his 20th ODI fifty but it is his fourth fifty in this series. He is looking in great touch now.
15:27 hrs IST: Catch dropped! Ajinkya Rahane, who is normally such a wonderful fielder, spills a straightforward chance of Du Plessis on 45. Amit Mishra the unlucky bowler. India are falling apart.
15:19 hrs IST: With every passing over, South Africa are upping the ante and the scoring rate has picked up. If De Kock and du Plessis stay longer, the stage is set for AB de Villiers later on to plunder the opposition towards the end.
15:15 hrs IST: India have found a new bogey in Quinton de Kock. He has scored his fifth century against them in just nine ODIs. It is his eighth century overall and he got to the landmark off just 78 balls. South Africa are in a great position at 165/1 in just 23 overs. They are on course for a big score. Mohit Sharma concedes 16 runs in the over. His overall figures: 5-0-51-1.
15:08 hrs IST: As De Kock continues to plunder India, over in Colombo, rain has forced play to be abandonedon day four while England are underway in their pursuit of 491in Dubai.
14:59 hrs IST: De Kock has smashed four boundaries in the last two overs as he motors away. He is really playing the spinners well and he is on course for his fifth century against India.
14:56 hrs IST: De Kock is continuing to hurt India. Harbhajan concedes 13 runs in his seventh over as the left-hander smashes him for two boundaries. The partnership between du Plessis and de Kock is now worth over100. South Africa are 134/1 after 19 overs, scoring at over seven runs an over.
14:47 hrs IST: While the De Kock and du Plessis partnership goes strong, in Dubai, Pakistan have declared at 354/6, setting England a target of 491. In Colombo, it has stopped raining but a resumption looks unlikely.
14:39 hrs IST: In the air and just over! Mohit Sharma has totally misjudged this catch. De Kock lofts Amit Mishra over mid-off and Mohit backpedals but the ball goes over. This could prove to be a costly miss.
14:28 hrs IST: Quinton de Kock's love affair with India continues. What a phenomenal record he continues to have against them. He scores a fifty off 42 balls. Whenever he has scored a fifty against India, he has gone on to make a century. It is his sixth fifty overall and first against India. The fifty-run partnership between him and du Plessis is also up.
14:19 hrs IST: Harbhajan Singh has been a real asset in this series. He has flighted the ball generously, generated drift and also turn. In four matches so far, he has taken five wickets at a decent rate of 4.57.
14:08 hrs IST: While De Kock and du Plessis try to maintain South Africa's aggression, you can read about Hashim Amla's achievement here. He has really shattered perceptions admirably.
14:00 hrs IST: Amla's departure has not slowed down the scoring rate. Quinton de Kock is carting Mohit Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to all parts of the ground. He has smashed six boundaries so far and Mohit has conceded 30 runs in his three overs. South Africa are 52/1 in just six overs.
13:50 hrs IST: WICKET! Oh boy, Amla's poor series has ended. He gets past 6000 runs but he falls immediately. Hashim Amla c MS Dhoni b Mohit Sharma 23 (13).
Amla was going like a train and he was finding the gaps to perfection. However, he departs and he ends the series on a poor note. Good length ball outside off, Amla loosely goes for a wafty drive but he edges it to Dhoni. In five innings, Amla has scored 89 runs at an average of 17.8. South Africa 33/1 after four overs.
13:47 hrs IST: There it is! Hashim Amla becomes the fastest player to reach 6000 runs in ODI cricket. He achieved the feat in just his 123rd ODI innings, going past Virat Kohli's mark of 136 innings. Take a bow, Mighty Hash!
13:45 hrs IST: Over in Dubai, lunch has been taken with Pakistan firmly on top. Younis Khan is on 112 and the lead is 447. Pakistan could potentially be going for the kill in the final session.
13:40 hrs IST: Hashim Amla, who has had a poor outing in the last four ODIs, is looking in ominous touch as he smashes Mohit Sharma for two boundaries in his first over. He gets closer and closer to breaking the world record in ODIs.
13:32 hrs IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar starts off proceedings in Mumbai with two slips in place. Quinton de Kock survives a close LBW shout second ball but the ball was heading down the leg side.
13:17 hrs IST: The action is just 15 minutes away in Wankhede. Over in Dubai, the legend of Younis Khan continues to grow. He notches up his 31st Test century and he is putting England on the mat. What a player! However, it is turning out to be a damp squib in Colombo, with rain continuing to delay proceedings.
13:05 hrs IST: The team news is that India have made no changes while South Africa have made two changes. Kyle Abbott replaces Chris Morris while Dean Elgar replaces Aaron Phangiso. So, South Africa have chosen to strengthen the batting in this match. Here are the playing XIs of both teams:
India (Playing XI): Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(wicketkeeper and captain), Axar Patel, Harbhajan Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Mohit Sharma
South Africa (Playing XI): Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers (captain), Dean Elgar, David Miller, Farhaan Behardien, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Kyle Abbott, Imran Tahir
13:00 hrs IST: A warm welcome to the fifth and final ODI between India and South Africa from Mumbai. This is a virtual final with the winner taking home the spoils and the loser going home with nothing. The latest news is that South Africa have won the toss and have chosen to bat first.
Home advantage is clearly in India's favour but overall there is hardly anything to choose between the two teams. So it is time for all cricket lovers to get ready for the battle at Mumbai on Sunday.
It has been a topsy-turvy series with the pendulum swinging from one end to the other. South Africa drew first blood with a narrow five-run win before India responded with a 22-run victory to draw level. The visitors took the lead yet again, however the hosts were equal to the task to make it 2-2.
Both teams have a lot to gain and everything to lose as the decider approaches. India may have consolidated their No. 2 spot in the ODI rankings, however it will not diminish their resolve to maintain their home record of not losing a series in this format to the Proteas
